Behind “Prime”
CHIKAKO YAJIMAは、今年11周年を迎えます。11周年の新作を考えるにあたり、最初に目を向けたのは「11」という数字そのものが持つ美しさでした。同じ「1」がふたつ並ぶ、極めてシンプルな形。そこからデザインを考えていく中で、ふと気になったのが、「0」と「1」で表現される2進法でした。
■ 0と1から広がる世界
「0」と「1」に目を向けるきっかけのひとつとなったのが、ここ数年のAIの目覚ましい進化です。CHIKAKO YAJIMAでも、最近はジュエリーの着用イメージの制作などにAIを取り入れています。もちろん、イメージを形にするためにはプロンプトや試行錯誤が必要ですが、何もないところから、これまでなら想像もしなかったようなビジュアルが短時間で立ち上がっていく。そのスピードにも驚かされますが、それ以上に、これまでとはまったく違う「ものづくりの方法」が生まれていることに、とても興味を惹かれています。そんなAIをはじめとするデジタルの世界を根底で支えているのが「0」と「1」。たったふたつの数字の組み合わせから、これほど複雑で多様なものが生み出されている。そのことが面白く、今回の新作でも一度は「0」と「1」から紡ぎ出されるデザインを考えました。けれど、さまざまな可能性を探っていく中で、最終的に戻ってきたのは、最初に感じた「11」という形の美しさでした。
■「11」を2本のラインへ
「1」の形をさらにミニマルに削ぎ落としていくと、一本の直線になる。今回の新作では、その2本の直線をわずかにずらすことからデザインを始めました。そこから生まれる形を、ひとつは直線で、もうひとつは曲線で表現。異なるフォルムでありながら、どちらも「11」という同じモチーフから生まれています。そして、金とプラチナのラインには、ジュエリーとしての奥行きと大人らしい輝きを添えるため、小口にダイヤモンドをセッティングしました。
■ 身につけたときに生まれる光
試作では、はじめ小口を直線的にカットし、その面にダイヤモンドを留めていました。ただ、実際に身につけてみると、ダイヤモンドがほとんど正面から見えません。そこで、小口そのものを斜めにカットする構造へ変更しました。ほんのわずかな角度を加えることで、身につけたときにダイヤモンドが自然と正面を向き、動くたびにキラッと光が覗く。ようやく満足のいく仕上がりになりました。そういえば、Protrude RingやIridescence Ringのセッティングも「斜め」がポイントになっています。今回のデザインを仕上げながら、改めて、自分は斜めが好きなんだなと気づきました。笑 ジュエリー単体で見たときの形だけではなく、角度をつけることで、身につけたときに初めて生まれる表情がある。そんなところにも、CHIKAKO YAJIMAらしさが表れているのかもしれません。
■ Primeという名前
そして、このシリーズに名付けたのが、“Prime（プライム）”。数学における「素数」を意味する言葉です。11は、1と自分自身でしか割り切ることのできない素数のひとつ。必要なものだけで成り立つ、その潔い性質にも惹かれました。余計な装飾を加えるのではなく、無駄を削ぎ落とし、必要な要素だけで形をつくる。そんなCHIKAKO YAJIMAが大切にしてきたデザインの考え方にも通じるように感じ、“Prime”と名付けました。
AIをきっかけに「0」と「1」に目を向け、そこからさまざまな形を考え、最後にもう一度「11」へ戻ってきた今回のデザイン。11周年という節目に改めて見つめた「11」という数字の美しさを、2本のラインと、わずかなずれ、そして小さなダイヤモンドの光へと落とし込んだ新シリーズ、“Prime（プライム）”。ぜひ実際に身につけたときに現れるフォルムと、さりげなく覗くダイヤモンドの輝きをお楽しみください。

This year marks the 11th anniversary of CHIKAKO YAJIMA.
When I began thinking about a new jewelry collection to commemorate our 11th anniversary, I was first drawn to the visual beauty of the number “11” itself.
Two identical “1”s standing side by side—an exceptionally simple form.
As I began exploring this idea through design, my attention turned to binary code, a system built entirely from “0” and “1.”
■ A World Built from 0 and 1
One of the things that led me to look more closely at “0” and “1” was the remarkable evolution of AI in recent years.
At CHIKAKO YAJIMA, we have also begun incorporating AI into parts of our creative process, including the creation of visual imagery showing how our jewelry looks when worn.
Of course, bringing an idea to life still requires carefully considered prompts and a great deal of trial and error. Yet it is fascinating to see an image emerge from nothing in such a short time—sometimes in ways we might never have imagined before.
The speed itself is remarkable, but what interests me even more is the emergence of an entirely new approach to making and creating.
At the foundation of AI and the digital world are just two numbers: “0” and “1.”
I was fascinated by the idea that something so complex and diverse could be created from combinations of only two elements. At one point, I explored the possibility of developing the new collection around forms derived from “0” and “1.”
But after considering many possibilities, I ultimately returned to what had first captured my attention: the simple beauty of “11.”
■ Transforming “11” into Two Lines
When the shape of the number “1” is reduced to its most minimal form, what remains is a single straight line.
The design of the new collection began by placing two of these lines together, with a subtle shift between them.
From this starting point, I developed two distinct forms: one linear and the other curved. Although their silhouettes are different, both originate from the same motif—the number “11.”
For the gold and platinum designs, diamonds are set into the end surfaces of the lines, adding depth and a refined brilliance to the minimalist forms.
■ Light Revealed When Worn
In the first prototype, the end of each line was cut straight, with a diamond set directly into the flat surface.
However, once I actually wore the piece, I realized that the diamond was barely visible from the front.
So I changed the structure, cutting the end surface at an angle.
That slight adjustment in angle allows the diamond to naturally face forward when the jewelry is worn, revealing a subtle flash of light with every movement. It was only then that the design finally felt complete.
Thinking about it, angled settings also play an important role in the Protrude Ring and Iridescence Ring.
While finishing Prime, I found myself realizing once again: apparently, I really do like angles. (laughs)
For me, jewelry is not only about the form of the object itself. A subtle angle can create an entirely different expression that only appears once the piece is worn on the body.
Perhaps that is also part of what makes a CHIKAKO YAJIMA design distinctive.
■ The Meaning Behind the Name “Prime”
The new collection is named “Prime,” referring to a prime number in mathematics.
Eleven is a prime number—a number divisible only by 1 and itself.
I was drawn to the purity of that idea: something complete, composed only of what is essential.
Rather than adding unnecessary ornamentation, CHIKAKO YAJIMA has always valued a minimalist approach to jewelry design—removing the unnecessary and creating form from only the elements that truly matter.
That philosophy felt closely connected to the nature of prime numbers, and so the collection became “Prime.”
Inspired by AI, I began by looking at “0” and “1,” explored a variety of forms, and eventually returned once again to “11.”
Created to mark CHIKAKO YAJIMA’s 11th anniversary, the new Prime jewelry collection translates the beauty of the number “11” into two lines, a subtle shift in alignment, and the quiet brilliance of a small diamond.
We hope you will experience Prime as it was intended to be seen—worn on the body, where its geometric form comes to life and the diamonds reveal their subtle sparkle with every movement.
