石の買い付けのため、アメリカ・アリゾナ州のTucson（ツーソン）へ行ってきました。アートや建築が好きな私にとって、ツーソンジェムショーは毎年ワクワクするイベントのひとつ。今年もこの特別な場所に行ってきたので、その魅力をお伝えします。
ツーソンジェムショーは、毎年1月末から2月にかけて、ツーソンで開催される世界最大級の宝石・鉱物の展示会。街全体がショー会場になり、50以上の会場で数千の出展者が集まります。お店ごとに並ぶ色とりどりの天然石、個性的なジュエリー、キラキラと輝く鉱物標本は、まるで宝石のテーマパークのような雰囲気。バイヤーやデザイナーだけでなく、一般のジュエリーファンも訪れることができるので、どんな人でも楽しめるのが魅力です。
ツーソンジェムショーが世界中のバイヤーにとって欠かせない理由は、やっぱり「ここでしか出会えないもの」があるから。世界各地の鉱山やディーラーが集まり、希少な天然石や最先端のジュエリーを一堂に見ることができる圧倒的な品揃えが魅力です。さらに、仲の良いブラジルやイタリアの業者さんと会えるのも楽しみのひとつ。特にブラジルのおじさんは柿の種が好きで、お土産に持って行くと「これこれ！」といった感じでいつも美味しそうに食べてくれます。そんなやりとりも、買い付けの楽しさのひとつです。
ツーソンは砂漠の街。昼夜の寒暖差は激しいものの、空気がカラッとしていて過ごしやすい気候です。青い空にそびえるサボテンの風景はとても魅力的で、街を歩くだけでも楽しい気分になります。橋の下にアートが描かれているなど、思わぬ場所で素敵な発見があるのもツーソンならではの魅力です。
今回の買い付けでも、皆さまにお届けしたい天然石をじっくり厳選しました。これからどんなジュエリーに仕上げるか、私自身もワクワクしています。次回は「実際の買い付けの様子」についてご紹介します。ぜひお楽しみに！
I went to Tucson, Arizona, to source gemstones for my Japanese jewelry brand. As someone who loves art and architecture, the Tucson Gem Show is one of the events I look forward to every year. This year, I had the chance to visit this special place again, and I’d love to share its charm with you.
Held annually from late January to February, the Tucson Gem Show is one of the world's largest exhibitions of gemstones and minerals. The entire city transforms into a massive showcase, with over 50 venues hosting thousands of exhibitors. Each booth is filled with colorful gemstones, unique jewelry, and dazzling mineral specimens, creating an atmosphere that feels like a gemstone-themed amusement park. The event welcomes not only buyers and designers but also jewelry enthusiasts, making it an exciting experience for everyone.
The reason why the Tucson Gem Show is essential for buyers from all over the world is simply because there are things you can only find here. With miners and dealers from various countries gathering in one place, the overwhelming selection of rare gemstones and cutting-edge jewelry is truly impressive. Another highlight is meeting familiar vendors from Brazil and Italy. In particular, a Brazilian vendor loves kaki-no-tane (a Japanese rice cracker snack), and whenever I bring it as a gift, he always enjoys it with a delighted “This is it!” These small interactions are part of what makes gemstone sourcing so enjoyable.
Tucson is a desert city, where the temperature fluctuates greatly between day and night. However, the dry air makes it a comfortable place to be. The sight of towering cacti against the bright blue sky is simply stunning, and just walking around the city is an enjoyable experience. You’ll also find unexpected artistic touches, like murals under bridges, making every stroll a chance for new discoveries.
For this trip, I carefully selected gemstones that I’m excited to bring to my Japanese jewelry brand, CHIKAKO YAJIMA. I can't wait to see how these stones will transform into beautiful pieces!
