Minimalist yet fashionable - the "Honeycomb" series debuted in the fall of 2024. The collection is characterized by its geometric form and sophisticated design. This time, we will introduce the story behind its creation and the background of its design.
While studying fashion design at an art university, I pursued unconventional forms, such as transforming fabric into a hard material. During my time at the university, I came across Hiroshi Ogawa's book "Paper Forms" while working on an assignment to make a "black little dress," and became fascinated by the beauty of paper sculptures. I also became interested in the "Miura folding" technique invented by Kosuke Miura, who is also known as the "architect of the universe. " The "Miura folding" technique was also used in the production of the catalogue when the Yoyogi Uehara store opened. I also came across honeycomb paper and was drawn to the beauty and functionality of its structure.
I believe that the pinnacle of beautiful forms can be found in natural objects. For example, tree branches and leaves grow in the optimal direction for photosynthesis and growth, with absolutely no waste. This pursuit of "logical beauty" is also reflected in the design of jewelry. In the honeycomb series, instead of simply incorporating the continuity of the honeycomb paper into the jewelry, we have pared it down to the utmost simplicity, resulting in a design that is sophisticated from any angle. 
The Honeycomb series features a simple yet eye-catching design. The geometric form creates a sophisticated atmosphere and matches a wide range of outfits, from casual to formal. Minimal Yet Mode – The Story Behind the "Honeycomb" Series
Debuting in the fall of 2024, the Honeycomb series by Japanese jewelry brand CHIKAKO YAJIMA is a collection defined by its geometric forms and refined design. In this article, I'd like to share the story behind its creation and the inspiration that shaped its design.
During my time at art school studying fashion design, I was deeply interested in exploring unconventional forms—transforming soft fabrics into rigid materials and breaking free from traditional concepts. While working on a "Black Little Dress" project, I discovered Hiroshi Ogawa's book, The Form of Paper, and became captivated by the beauty of paper structures. Around the same time, I also encountered "Miura Folding," a technique developed by Koryo Miura, a scientist known as the "Architect of Space." This folding method, designed for space structures, fascinated me, and I later incorporated it into the catalog design for my Yoyogi-Uehara store.
It was also during this period that I encountered honeycomb paper. I was drawn to its structural beauty and functionality, which deepened my appreciation for intricate, yet efficient, forms.
I have always believed that the pinnacle of beauty lies in nature. Take, for example, the way tree branches and leaves grow—they extend in precisely the right directions for optimal photosynthesis and growth, without an inch of waste. This "functional beauty" is something I strive to embody in my jewelry designs.
For the Honeycomb series, rather than simply replicating the repeating structure of honeycomb paper, I refined the form to its essence—stripping it down to its most minimal yet sophisticated expression. The result is a collection that is visually striking yet seamlessly integrates into daily life.
